Berberine in Neuro Recall: No Memory Studies, Real Interactions
Quick answer
Berberine HCl is one of ten ingredients in Neuro Recall's 635 mg blend, with no amount printed. No human studies have tested it for memory; it has been studied for blood sugar at about 250 to 500 mg two or three times a day. It can interact with several medicines, may lower blood sugar, and should be avoided in pregnancy.

What is berberine?
Berberine is a compound found in several plants, including barberry. Supplements usually carry it as berberine HCl (hydrochloride), the form named on the label.
In Neuro Recall, berberine HCl is one of ten ingredients inside the 635 mg WMG-NVT Exclusive Blend. No amount is printed for it, so nobody outside the maker knows how much a serving holds.

Why is berberine in a memory formula, and how is it thought to work?
The label does not say why it is there. Berberine's human research is about blood sugar and weight, and a 2021 review said it may lower blood glucose (NCCIH, Diabetes and Dietary Supplements).
Any brain effects come from lab and animal studies, and those have not been confirmed in people (Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation, Berberine). A plant that acts on a cell in a dish does not tell you what a capsule does for memory.
The same capsule holds other ingredients studied for blood sugar: chromium and cinnamon, plus alpha lipoic acid. That matters most for people who take diabetes medicine.

What did studies of berberine find?
For memory, nothing: no human study has tested it. For blood sugar and weight, the evidence is weak and inconclusive, and studies used widely varying doses and forms.

| Question | What the sources say | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Does it help memory in people? | Not tested in any human study | (Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation, Berberine) |
| Does it prevent dementia? | No clinical evidence | (Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation, Berberine) |
| Does it lower blood sugar? | May lower blood glucose; overall evidence weak and inconclusive | (NCCIH, Diabetes and Dietary Supplements) |
| Does it help weight loss? | Evidence is not conclusive | (NCCIH, Berberine and Weight Loss) |
| What dose is used? | About 250 to 500 mg two or three times a day | (LiverTox (NIDDK), Berberine) |
The ADDF review is an older non-profit foundation page from 2017, not a government source. We found nothing newer that tested berberine for memory.
Neuro Recall berberine: label amount vs. studied dose
The two cannot be compared, because Neuro Recall prints no berberine amount. The studied dose is known; the label dose is not.
| Measure | Amount |
|---|---|
| Usual dose of berberine products | 250 to 500 mg, two or three times a day |
| That dose per day | 500 to 1,500 mg |
| Berberine in Neuro Recall | Not published |
| Whole blend, shared by ten ingredients | 635 mg |
| Even split of the blend | About 63.5 mg each (the real split is not printed) |
A single 250 mg dose would already fill about 39% of the blend. Memorial Sloan Kettering describes enzyme effects at doses used in some studies (Memorial Sloan Kettering, Berberine (About Herbs)); whether a smaller amount matters is not known, so treat the interactions below as possible.
Why the missing amount matters more here
For most blend ingredients, a missing amount only means you cannot judge the benefit. For berberine it also means you cannot judge the interaction risk, so tell your pharmacist the amount is not printed.
What are berberine's drug interactions?
Berberine can change how the body handles several medicines. Tap each point around the barberry to read one; all of them come from MSK (Memorial Sloan Kettering, Berberine (About Herbs)) and NCCIH (NCCIH, Berberine and Weight Loss).

Immune-suppressing drug
Cyclosporine
Berberine can raise blood levels of cyclosporine. NCCIH uses it as its example of a berberine interaction.
Liver enzymes
CYP enzymes
It can lower the activity of CYP2D6, 2C9 and 3A4 at doses used in some studies. These enzymes break down many common drugs.
Diabetes pills
Sulfonylureas
It may change how these drugs are broken down. How much this matters in practice has not been determined.
Diabetes medicine
Blood sugar
It may lower blood glucose. Chromium, cinnamon and alpha lipoic acid in the same capsule point the same way.
Mother and baby
Pregnancy
It may be unsafe in pregnancy or breastfeeding, and likely unsafe for infants because it can raise bilirubin.
Side effects
Stomach
Upset stomach, diarrhea and constipation, usually mild. These were the main effects in studies.
If you take any prescription, bring the bottle to your pharmacist. The full list of cautions across the formula is on the Neuro Recall side effects page.
Who should avoid berberine or ask first?
Avoid it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and ask first if you take regular medicine. The label already says not to use the product if pregnant or nursing.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist first, and bring the bottle so they can see berberine and the other blood-sugar ingredients.
Skip Neuro Recall. The label says not to use it if pregnant or nursing, and it is sold for adults.
What to bring to your pharmacist
- The Neuro Recall bottle, so they can read the full blend list
- Every prescription and over-the-counter medicine you take
- Any other supplement with berberine, chromium, cinnamon or alpha lipoic acid
On the liver, berberine looks low-risk: LiverTox rates it an unlikely cause of liver injury (LiverTox (NIDDK), Berberine). The liver caution in Neuro Recall belongs to a different ingredient, covered on the green tea extract page.
Berberine: common questions
Does berberine help memory?
There is no human evidence that it does. No studies have tested berberine on human thinking, and brain effects seen in animal and lab work have not been confirmed in people.
What are berberine side effects?
Mostly stomach and bowel symptoms, such as upset stomach, diarrhea and constipation. Memorial Sloan Kettering calls it generally well tolerated.
Which medicines can interact with berberine?
It can raise blood levels of cyclosporine, can slow the CYP2D6, 2C9 and 3A4 enzymes at doses used in some studies, and may affect how sulfonylurea diabetes pills are broken down. Ask a pharmacist before combining it with any prescription.
Can berberine lower blood sugar too much?
It may lower blood sugar, according to a 2021 review cited by NCCIH. If you take diabetes medicine, talk to your provider before using it.
Is berberine safe with metformin?
None of the sources we read name metformin. NCCIH says anyone on diabetes drugs should tell their providers about every supplement, so ask before you combine them.
Who should not take berberine?
People who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and anyone giving it to an infant. People on cyclosporine, diabetes medicine or drugs broken down by liver enzymes should ask a doctor first.
Is berberine bad for your liver?
LiverTox rates it an unlikely cause of liver injury. Do not confuse it with green tea extract, which is a known, rare cause.
How much berberine is in Neuro Recall?
The amount is not published. Berberine HCl is one of ten ingredients sharing the 635 mg blend, and the label gives no split.
Can I take berberine with chromium picolinate?
Neuro Recall already contains both, plus cinnamon. All three have been studied for blood sugar with weak evidence, so if you take diabetes medicine, ask your provider before adding more of either.
Why is berberine in a memory supplement?
The label does not say. Berberine's human research is about blood sugar and weight, not memory.
